Three days is the sweet spot for Christmas in Calgary: enough for the big markets, the best lights, a holiday show and a day in the Rockies. This plan works best on a weekend between November 27 and December 13, when nearly everything is open at once.
Day 1: Markets and the Zoo
- Morning: start at the Calgary Farmers’ Market Christmas Market for breakfast and local gifts (free, indoors).
- Afternoon: drive south to the Spruce Meadows International Christmas Market (weekends to December 6). Arrive around 2 PM so you shop in daylight and see the fire pits after dark.
- Evening: ZOOLIGHTS from 5:30 PM. Allow 90 minutes, and book online ahead for the best price.
Day 2: Heritage and Downtown
- Morning: Once Upon A Christmas at Heritage Park on December weekends (breakfast buffet, wagon rides, Santa). On other days, try Holiday Wonder indoors.
- Late afternoon: the Calgary Winter Market at Eau Claire Plaza, then a walk past the big tree and across to Prince’s Island.
- Evening: A Christmas Carol at the Max Bell Theatre (to December 27) or The Nutcracker at the Jubilee (December 11–24).
- Late: drive past the free Lions Festival of Lights, open to midnight.
Day 3: Banff
- Morning: drive 90 minutes west on Highway 1. Buy a Parks Canada pass.
- Afternoon: the Banff Christmas Market at the train station (four weekends, November 19 to December 13), with stops on the Hot Chocolate Trail.
- Evening: In Search of Christmas Spirit in the Cascade of Time Garden. It’s free, but tickets must be reserved.
