Nothing smells like Christmas like a real tree. Here’s where Calgarians get theirs.
Christmas Tree Lots
From mid-November, tree lots pop up across the city at garden centres, community associations and parking lots, often run as fundraisers by service clubs and scout groups. Garden centres usually carry the widest choice of species: balsam and Fraser fir hold needles best indoors.
U-Cut Farms Near Calgary
A handful of farms within an hour of Calgary let you choose and cut your own tree, many with hot chocolate, wagon rides and Santa on weekends. Most open in late November and sell out of larger trees by mid-December, so go early.
Cut Your Own on Public Land
Alberta lets residents cut a Christmas tree for personal use on designated public land, with a free permit from the province. Rules cover where you can cut and tree size; check Alberta’s forestry website before heading out, and never cut in a provincial or national park.
Keeping It Fresh
- Make a fresh cut on the trunk before you put it in water.
- Keep the stand topped up; Calgary’s dry air drains trees fast.
- Keep it away from heat vents and fireplaces.
Christmas Tree Recycling
After the holidays, the City of Calgary collects real trees for composting at seasonal drop-off sites in January. Remove all decorations, lights and stands first.
