December in Calgary is famously unpredictable. You might get a sunny chinook afternoon above 10°C, or a week of –30°C with wind chill. Here’s what to expect and how to dress for the city’s outdoor Christmas events.
Typical December Weather
- Daytime highs: usually around 0°C to –5°C.
- Overnight lows: usually around –10°C to –15°C.
- Cold snaps: Arctic air can push temperatures below –25°C, colder with wind chill, for days at a time.
- Chinooks: warm westerly winds can lift temperatures well above zero in a few hours, then refreeze everything.
- Snow: usually light and dry, but enough to make roads slick.
Short Days
Around the winter solstice, the sun rises after 8:30 AM and sets around 4:30 PM. That’s good news for light shows: ZOOLIGHTS is fully dark from opening, and most markets glow by late afternoon.
What to Wear
- Layers: a base layer, a warm mid layer and a windproof outer shell.
- Insulated waterproof boots with good grip; paths get icy.
- A toque, mitts (warmer than gloves) and a scarf or neck warmer.
- Hand and toe warmers for long nights at outdoor light shows.
- For kids: snow pants and an extra pair of mitts.
If It’s Too Cold
Below –25°C, swap outdoor plans for Holiday Wonder, a show, or the Farmers’ Market. See indoor Christmas things to do in Calgary. Some events cancel or reschedule in extreme cold; ZOOLIGHTS moves your ticket to another date if it closes for weather.
Driving
Use winter tires, keep a scraper and emergency kit in the car, and check 511 Alberta before heading to Banff. See getting around Calgary at Christmas.
