For many Calgarians, Christmas Eve means candlelight and carols. Here’s how to find a service.
Downtown Churches
Calgary’s historic downtown churches, including the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Central United and Knox United, traditionally hold several Christmas Eve services, from early family services to late candlelight and midnight services. Times are posted in December.
Family Services
Many churches hold an early (around 4 or 5 PM) family service with a children’s pageant, which is the most popular slot: arrive 30 minutes early.
Carols and Sacred Music
- The Calgary Phil’s Traditional Christmas at Grace Presbyterian Church, December 8–9 and more dates. See Christmas concerts.
- The free outdoor Calgary Nativity Pageant, with live actors and animals.
- Church choir carol services and lessons-and-carols evenings through December.
Ukrainian and Orthodox Christmas
Some parishes celebrate on January 7. See Ukrainian Christmas in Calgary.
